Poll: Eight is Enough (or Too Much)

February 10th, 2009

On Jan. 26, Los Angeles mom, Nadya Suleman, made national news giving birth to octuplets. Now she’s stirred up controversy and debate about whether fertility treatments should be regulated. It turns out Suleman is 33, single, unemployed, lives with her mother — and already has six children. Knowing this, should her doc have allowed her to try and have eight babies at once? According to her mother, she only wanted “one more girl.”

Since the goal of most fertility treatments is to get one healthy baby — doctors usually implant a smaller number of fertilized embryos.

When I first heard about the extraordinary birth of the octuplets, my initial reaction was “Those must be some ecstatic new parents!” As in, assuming that these babies were being born to a childless couple, and one that, would be able to afford to care for these babies.

What a shock it has been to later find that the octuplets’ mother not only already had 6 other children, but that she apparently can barely afford to care for them. is a single parent, lives with her own parents in a 3 bedroom old house, and does not even have a job.

Do the math! The formula sounds deadly!, and she now has 14 children!

There are red flags all over this story.

My bet is there is an unscrupulous fertility doctor/doctors (like the one that is not returning anyone’s calls) and that treated this woman. I am willing to bet that, sadly, there was an offer made to this lady, one that she couldn’t refuse.

Of course this mother’s mental capacity has to be questioned, to say the least.

As with most anything in society, there have to be ethical lines that should not be crossed. Fertility treatments are not an exception.

I think the important ones here are the octuplets, and their existing six siblings. All 14 are innocent lives that must be looked after by Child Care Protective Services!

    Please protect those children!

There are people out there struggling already! I’m tired of woman having kids that they can’t take care of. This woman was already getting assistance from the government for the first six kids! How much are tax payers gonna have to fork out for the rest of these kids?
